A cozy cup of tea. A delicious slice of pizza. The warmth of being surrounded by your community.
That's what a small restaurant in the town of Arthur, Ont. was offering people stranded in the snow earlier this week.
It all began Monday evening when a severe snowstorm covered area roads about an hour north of Kitchener, leading to the closure of Highway 6.
The family-run restaurant, Erni's Place, is in the heart of the town, just off of Highway 6 on Smith Street.
The owners said they knew they couldn't leave residents of their community stranded, so they jumped in to help.
A Facebook post Monday by the restaurant said: "Urgent Message - Weather Alert. Due to extreme weather conditions around Hwy 6 and Hwy 109, road conditions are very dangerous. If you're stuck or need a place to warm up during the blizzard, please come to Erni's Place Restaurant and Pizza. We will be open 24 hours and welcome anyone who needs to take shelter or just warm up. Feel free to stay as long as you need."
Jasman Gill co-owns Erni's Place with her parents, Amanpreet and Harry.
She said her parents were up all night on Monday to help over 30 people stay out of the cold after they noticed drivers were becoming stranded by the snow and the road closure.
Ontario Provincial Police closed Highway 6, the main route in and out of town, around 6:30 p.m. between Arthur and Mount Forest due to "poor weather conditions."
"Through Monday, it was just zero visibility on the road. The winds were just crazy," Gill told CBC News.
"[My mom and dad] always say everyone helps everyone..., He made [stranded drivers] tea with cups, gave them cups and everything.... My mom was making pizza slices, handing out drinks. It was just to stay warm. A lot of people didn't even have heat in their car."
The family kept their restaurant open all night on Monday and finally went home by noon the following day.
Gill said her family has received a lot of love online since that night.
"I'm so happy for my parents because I know they do this stuff on a regular basis," she said. "They've always had really, really big hearts and they've always put other people first."
Gill said caring for each other is part of having community pride.
"We love being from Arthur. We proudly say we're from Arthur just because the people are amazing," she said. "It is neighbours helping neighbours."
She said she is proud of her parents.
"Just looking at our parents and seeing all the love they're getting on social media.... We are so proud to call them our parents and to have them to look up to," she said.
"I'm so happy that they can share their goodness with the rest of the world. All I want to say is just do good. That's it. Be nice, be kind to others."
